Date and place of birth: June 8, 1980, Trnava
Ivan Lesay has been serving as State Secretary of the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic since June 2015. He was the Council of the EU chief negotiator for EU Budget 2017 during the Slovak Presidency. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the European Stability Mechanism, the Economic and Financial Committee and the Eurogroup Working Group. Since 2013, he has been member of the OECD working group on New Approaches to Economic Challenges (NAEC) chaired by Secretary-General of the OECD. In May 2016, he was appointed member of the Board of Directors of the European Investment Bank. He also serves as alternate governor of the International Monetary Fund. He is chairman of the supervisory board and co-founder of the Slovak Investment Holding.
Dr. Lesay joined the Ministry of Finance in 2012 as an advisor to the Minister. He accepted this appointment after several years of active academic career at the Institute of Economic Research of the Slovak Academy of Sciences (IER SAS). During his academic career, he taught at the University of Vienna, Comenius University in Bratislava and the Trnava University. His scholarly work appeared in several international peer-reviewed journals, including Europe-Asia Studies, Nova Economia and The Austrian Journal of Development. He is the laureate of the 2011 Slovak Presidential Award for young researchers of the SAS.
Ivan Lesay holds Master’s degrees in Political Science from the Trnava University and the Central European University in Budapest where he specialised in Political Economy. He earned his PhD. in Economics at the IER SAS in 2010 with a dissertation on the development policies of the European Investment Bank.
